Here is the segment that we did on Friday!

I always love to work with Studio 5,
Thanks for having me on.

4 ideas on how to decorate
your front porch for Fall---
all for under $50.00.

1. Paint the front door ---a little fresh paint in a fall color, really adds to the autumn feel.
2. Add vinyl numbers on the door---what a fun way to show your address.
3. Hang a wreath---a great way to add some texture and personality.
4. Place a pot of mums and some pumpkins--- flowers and pumpkins always add a pop of color.

How to bring some of that fall décor inside.

• I love to add little pumpkins ---
there are a wide variety of styles, and you can put them in almost anything.
• Add a lantern with an orange candle.
• I have a cake plate full of leaves and squash on my table.
• Hang a wreath on the mirror in the entry.
• Frame a few pressed leaves.

Here is the Segment that we did on Studio 5 today---

Simple Ways to Make Your Laundry Room Fun

4 tips to help create a more happy space:

1. Add Color - A quick and easy way to do this is with paint. No matter what size your space is, a little paint can make a BIG difference. I chose green because it makes me happy and it just feels good to me. You can also add fabric with fun colors as well as a few accessories to tie the color throughout the room.

2. Add Light - A laundry room is a space that you want to see what you are doing. You can use a task light, there are many varieties even some that can be clamped onto an shelf. In my laundry room there is also space to do some craft projects so it is nice to have a lamp to see better with as well as create a more comfortable atmosphere.

3. Add Greenery or Flowers - You want your laundry room to feel fresh and clean. The greenery gives a fresh feel to the space and flowers just make you happy.

4. Personalize the Space- Add in some of your personality, with photos, artwork, items that you love.

I added a photo bulletin board and filled it with pictures and attached little items that I like. I also added a mirror and some hooks that belonged in my great grandfather's home.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So, no matter what size your laundry room ---
you can do a few things to love it more!

Here is the Studio 5 segment that we did today.
(I have to say they are so fun to work with!)

1- A Collection. This really is a great place to showcase a collection. Use items that have a particular theme or color; maybe you love blue glass and have all kinds of shapes and sizes. Dishes out of your cupboards can make a very nice collection. I found some great pictures of a collection of cake plates and other assorted treasures that Julie from http://www.thelittleredshop.blogspot.com/2010/04/ma-cuisine-week-iii-little-missed.html arranged above her kitchen cabinets.
(Thank you so much Julie!)

2- Natural Elements. I love to add some unexpected greenery; boxes of grass, a few balls that are covered in berries or some fruit.

3- Groupings & Different Heights. You can use this design principle in all kinds of accessorizing and it will work. Group items in odd numbers, using different heights, then play with it. Do not be discouraged if it does not come together the 1st time. Keep trying and you will come up with something that you like. You also get a lot of exercise climbing up and down from your counter!

4- Using the Right Size Items For Your Space. If you have a taller ceiling and more space, you want to use items that are larger in scale so that it feels balanced. If you put smaller items in a large space it will just feel cluttered. If you have a smaller area and you try to fit in items that are too large it will feel off balance. So if you are aware of this when you start it will help you in deciding what works for that area and what does not.

How to Decorate Using Red ---
Today's Studio 5 Segment

Why use red?

Adding a little red to a room gives the space LIFE!

It creates a pop and a finishing touch. Because red is a more intense color, less of it is needed to create an effect. Some designers say you should use red in every room. I'm a believer you should at least try red in every room. Depending on the shade, red has the potential to accent nearly every color scheme and design. It does not have to be an overwhelming addition, such as a large piece of red furniture (although I'm in love with my own red couch!).

Even small pops of color and accents can add an element of interest and even unexpected surprise to your style. You would be surprised at all the little red items you can find around your house, and you don't have to spend a dime!

I did a Studio 5 TV segment today:

6 Simple Steps to Create an Inviting Entry

1. Hang a Mirror
A mirror creates more light in the space and is nice to use as you come in and out of your home.

2. Have some kind of table.
If you have room, this is a great addition. It can be something you may not have considered (a dresser or an old sewing cabinet). If you have a small space and cannot fit a table, hang a shelf under a mirror, it works great as a place for your mail or your keys.

3. Put a lamp or a pair of lamps on the table.
It adds to the warm and inviting feel that you want to create.

4. Incorporate a natural element.
A plant or a vase of flowers works nicely!

5. If you have room---add a chair or two.
It is nice to have a place to sit while you are putting on your shoes.

6. Make it your style!
The entry is an introduction to your home.

Thank you so much

"Managing the Differences When You Your Spouse Have Different Styles"

It was a really hilarious day!

Thursday, September 17, 2009

I just wanted to share with you --- a little about how this day went!

I was invited to do a segment on KSL TV Studio 5 and present a few items to show how to achieve certain styles in a room. It was pretty fun trying to come up with items for 5 different styles --- first of all I thought immediately of a dear neighbor --- the only one in our whole neighborhood with a mustard gold and grey house with red doors, quite contemporary. She had just the perfect items for that catagory, even a piece of fabric with a very geometric design.

I gathered a couple of items from another friend. I had considered going shopping but decided it would take too much time! And so I continued my search through the houses of wonderful supportive friends. In the end I had two suitcases full of props, imagine one with sticks poking out of the top zipper---good thing for wheels!

Of course you have to do your hair just right and make-up as well as choose something to wear that is not white, black or too patterned, and something that you have not worn before. On the way out the door I packed the bag for my three year old who was going to her first day of dance and then to pre-school, fixed her hair and found shoes---thank goodness for another great friend who ran her around for me today. Then with suitcases in the back of the van I drove the carpool of my other kids to the school, dropped them off and hit the freeway.

I had all of my notes for the segment and was running them through my head as I drove the hour to the studio. As it turned out the segment was next to last for that day so it was shorter than we had planned ---LIVE TV is really so impromptu! I have to say I LOVED how the props turned out, I had not really set them all out at home. So when it came to what to say, it was pretty tricky trying to condense descriptions and hurry without sounding too rushed, and of course remembering the right words to describe things! It was crazy, but such fun to be part of.

I have to say I am loving what I do and feel like it is such a blessing to be able to share how to make your homes a place that YOU want to be in. And at the same time be in my own home with my own family! LIFE IS GOOD.
