This Family Room Makeover is such a great example
of how to take different types of furniture
and make them look good all together in one room.
Here is the BEFORE
This homeowner had taken one of my classes and had so
many things right---
many things right---
Notice the lamps turned on, the throw on the couch
and natural elements throughout the space.
AFTER
Sometimes it is nice to have a new set of eyes
to walk through your home and see other possibilities.
We found a round leather ottoman upstairs in the study,
it really brought a different feel to the room.
And of course you will notice the brown loveseat
(isn't it just wonderful!)
We traded this out with the matching loveseat.
The reason I did this was to bring more color and interest to the room.
Since the walls were white and the curtains not yet in place,
the patterned loveseat really brought some spice to the room!
BEFORE
There are two things that I would like you to notice about this shot.
1. That the fireplace is covered up by the chair.
A fireplace is a natural focal point and always a great place to draw attention.
2. The furniture here does not match and is lacking something.
AFTER
See how we moved the chair away from the fireplace,
and placed a number of more interesting objects in the space above.
We also postioned the furniture
around the fireplace so it felt like the focal point of the room.
We took out the loveseat that matched the couch and brought in
the brown patterned sofa.
It became the inspiration piece of the room.
We took the gold, red, and green that were in the sofa and
added those colors throughout the space using
toss pillows, books and accessories.

The red pillows in the chairs as well as the accessories
above the fireplace help to unify the room.
Spreading the color throughout the room really ties it all together.
We added in some gold and red accessories as well as a natural element and some fabric.
The fabric softened the square opening and added color to the space.
So... if you want to create a designer look---
Use furniture that does not match---
BUT is tied together with colors that you have pulled from an inspiration piece.
(here, it was the brown patterened loveseat.)
Move those colors around the room with toss pillows, throw blankets and accessories.
This will create a unified space that looks fantastic but does not all match exactly!

I love looking through magazines
just to see what they have put together.
Rarely do you see the furniture match.
For example, look at the white painted table
and the black painted chair.
Then you have a worn wooden stool.
Now there are reasons that this works:
See how they have tied the colors together in this room.
1. The white painted table goes nicely with the white trim in the room.
2. The black ties in nicely with the pillows on the bench.
3. And the worn stool as well as the wooden bowl gives a nice feel of the old with the new and ties in with the warm stained floor and kitchen cabinets.
In this office there is a wooden desk with a couple of worn iron tables.
It makes the room so much more interesting
when you can add something old to your space.
Notice how the two chairs are covered in different fabric
as well as the little footstool.
Because they are using blues and browns it ties the room together.
See how this room is tied together by color.
They use blue green and pink, but the furniture is all different styles.
The color throughout the space makes it work.
So don't be afraid to experiement---
take something from one room and swap it out to another.
take something from one room and swap it out to another.
Use color to tie it in with what you already have.
Toss pillows, flowers and books are easy ways to add color.
HAVE FUN!!

What elements do you see that make it work?
Notice the chairs, the shape and styles
The surfaces in the room are painted black, red, yellow,
and wood stained.
Even the fabric is different.
Yet it feels good.
Fabrics: The curtains and the runner on the buffet really soften the room. Also some of the chairs have fabric on the seats.

Notice the black painted coffee table and the two end tables, one is short with a wood stain --- the other tall.
Look at the toss pillows, they all have different fabrics and patterns --- BUT the COLORS go together.
that is the unifying element.
Be Brave!
Try a few things together that you normally would not consider.
It can be so fun!

As you look at these next pictures from Better Homes and Gardens notice --- Does the furniture match?
As I have worked in homes I have found it to be so common to have a matching sofa and love seat as well as matching tables.
BUT when you LOOK in magazines you almost always see a sofa and 2 chairs ---
And they are not exactly the same.
See how they use the pillows and accessories to tie the color around the room.
The furniture does not need to match --- we just want it to look good together.
The tables are wicker and the cabinet in the back has a worn dark finish. But they are tied together by the color of the accessories and pillows.

Notice the light stained coffee table and then the dark end table. Next to the ivory colored chair is a taller round metal table.
See how the pillow, the apples, and the flowers, tie in the color around the room and all of the different pieces feel good together.

See how the two chairs are different
and the coffee table and the end table between the chairs are not the same.
On the sofa are pillows, that tie in the colors of the room, but they are not the exact same fabric.
This is a great opprotunity to tie in that chair from your grandma, or a great yard sale piece.
Mix things up a bit --- add some of your own personality!
