Fabric can add such life to a kitchen!

 BEFORE

 AFTER
We added some color to the windows, the fabric and pattern as well
as the color gives so much more interest and warmth to the kitchen.

BEFORE there was little that tied the space together.

AFTER
The runner on the table as well as the curtains become an
 inspiration piece.
You can use those same colors to accessorize
 the rest of the kitchen.

Try a little fabric in your Kitchen!!

This is the house of a good friend of mine.

Her house was ready for a good "facelift"!
Here is a sneek peek at what we did.

I will show you some quick before and afters
and in upcoming posts
I will give you all of the juicy details and more photos!

It was quite the project and we had some really funny stories.

My good friend Connie does a blog and is a fantastic writer.
She will be doing a write up on the redesign
and I will be sure and give you all a link, so you can see
how it all went down from her perspective as well.

See you at the end of the week!

Staging a Kitchen

This post is a continuation of the home we staged to sell.
Isn't this a beautiful dining area.

I wish I had before photos because these cabinets used to be golden oak!
She had someone come in and spray them all an expresso brown.
What an update!

When staging a kitchen to sell you want to have everything CLEAN and the clutter removed.

It is also very nice to have some fresh flowers on the table.

Additional rooms
 to be posted soon!

Here is the Studio 5 segment that we did today.
(I have to say they are so fun to work with!)

1- A Collection. This really is a great place to showcase a collection. Use items that have a particular theme or color; maybe you love blue glass and have all kinds of shapes and sizes. Dishes out of your cupboards can make a very nice collection. I found some great pictures of a collection of cake plates and other assorted treasures that Julie from http://www.thelittleredshop.blogspot.com/2010/04/ma-cuisine-week-iii-little-missed.html arranged above her kitchen cabinets.
(Thank you so much Julie!)

2- Natural Elements. I love to add some unexpected greenery; boxes of grass, a few balls that are covered in berries or some fruit.

3- Groupings & Different Heights. You can use this design principle in all kinds of accessorizing and it will work. Group items in odd numbers, using different heights, then play with it. Do not be discouraged if it does not come together the 1st time. Keep trying and you will come up with something that you like. You also get a lot of exercise climbing up and down from your counter!

4- Using the Right Size Items For Your Space. If you have a taller ceiling and more space, you want to use items that are larger in scale so that it feels balanced. If you put smaller items in a large space it will just feel cluttered. If you have a smaller area and you try to fit in items that are too large it will feel off balance. So if you are aware of this when you start it will help you in deciding what works for that area and what does not.

Life has been full of all kinds of excitement. This week I had Lasik surgery on my eyes. What a miracle!  I had such a great experience. The good folks at Hoopes Vision in Sandy, Utah were remarkable.  It has been 28 years that I have been wearing contacts and now I can see the alarm clock in the morning without asking my husband what time it is---he is happy!
But really I am thrilled!! Now on the the good stuff.

Finally --- a few photos of my new home!

I have to say this has been such a fun experience.  Starting with a fresh canvas!

This is the BEFORE lots of white walls!  Now, I moved from a home that had all kinds of color on the walls, so this time I decided to go more neutral and see how it felt.  We painted three different colors of taupe throughout the house.

AFTER - A little warm paint on the walls and some furniture.  Notice the lamps, yes - I do love lamps!

So--- these are a few different spaces in my new home.
I will be sharing some tips and ideas with you on what was new and what was old and some shots of my other house so you can see how we can use the original items in the new space.

It will be fun---so come on back!!

I am joining Transformation Thursday --- see what's happening over there.

Okay --- I am still working on putting things together at my new home, I promise to get you pictures soon. For now here are a few ideas for above your kitchen cabinets---

Here are a few ideas for above the kitchen cabinets or on shelves in the kitchen.

We used fresh GREEN and WHITE --- which is a nice way to give you a lift in the middle of winter!
These were just regular plates out of her kitchen cabinet, we just propped them up as part of the display.

Notice the odd numbers and the different heights. We also added a couple of natural elements
---the ball with little green berries and the small twig ball.

This was on a shelf in the same kitchen. The clock has similar decorative iron, and a little greenery softens it up.

This grouping is in 3's and the green artichoke follows the theme color.

More white plates out of the kitchen cupboard with a little green grass and a green candle.

Above the cabinets, a large platter works because of the high ceiling.

We made a grouping of 3 ---added some greenery
and the ornamental iron ties in with the other pieces in the kitchen.

We did all of this using what the homeowner had in her home already.

Try a few plates from your cupboard with a little greenery and see what you can come up with!

I am participating in a blog party over at Metamorphisis Monday

Go and take a look at some fun posts.

Above Kitchen Cabinets

I have had some requests to talk about ---
ABOVE kitchen cabinets.

The majority of the photos that I share with you are just from regular everyday people's houses --- each with their own style, and using items they already have.
This homeowner loves the cottage look!

BEFORE

AFTER
The changes here are subtle but do make a difference.
We took down the gerber daisies to make
the colors more simple,
and created a little grouping with the teapot and cup.

It feels less cluttered

The little pink roses go nicely with the pattern on the china.

BEFORE
This cabinet felt like a little too much was there.

AFTER
We took down the extra flowers and just kept the little pink roses with the greenery. To create more of a group I pulled the two white plates back, and closer together.

BEFORE
These cabinets were also pretty full.

AFTER
We made two groupings instead of having
so many items lined up.

It is always pleasing to use odd numbers.

So when you are trying to decide what to place on the tops of your kitchen cabinets---
Try these 3 tips:
1. Use items that have a particular theme or color
2. Place them in groupings
3. Add some type of natural element
(here we used greenery and little pink roses)

Sometimes a wall in the kitchen just needs something.

This homeowner loves teapots and had some china that she really wanted to have in her kitchen.

Before the wall was empty . . . just waiting for the right fit.

The shelf by itself was not quite big enough.
So we added the ornamental iron on each side. It created just the right balance for the space.

Notice the group of three on the shelf, and the natural elements (flowers and greenery)

The lace added a fabric element to the shelf and the ornamental iron mimics the lace feel.

The homeowner was so happy because she now has such a nice focal point in the kitchen and it has items that she loves!
