Natural Elements--little green plants throughout the space.

A couple of chairs so you can create a conversation area.

We added:
 Accessories to the shelves.

A Change of Style

This beautiful bedroom now reflects the taste
of the woman of the house.

This client was new to the home, she married into family of 6
where her new husband had been a widower.
So, much of the style of the room was that of the
 previous lady of the house.

BEFORE
There was a lot in the room and we needed to trim it down.
Notice the heavy armoir on the side wall.

AFTER
We moved the heavy piece and created a grouping on the wall.
It feels much more to scale and quite warm and inviting.

BEFORE

AFTER
We found out as we tried moving the armoir that it was in three pieces.
Which was perfect, because now we could take the drawer sections
and use them in the closet as a dresser.

BEFORE

AFTER
The art grouping on the wall with the lamp
even out the space and help to create a warm inviting atmosphere.

The newly married couple now have space
to hang some wedding photos.

Notice what a difference the curtains make.

Simple and clean decor.

BEFORE
A different view of the side of the room.
See how the mirrored piece was just to large for the space.

AFTER
The bookcase with the painting feels much better.

BEFORE
Notice the corner by the window.
The dresser that is there feels too tight for the space.

AFTER
See how the taller narrower cabinet works so much better.

Sooo... fun to see the transformation!

I have had some requests for help with decorating book shelves.
Sometimes they just get full of too many things and it is time to "Freshen them up"!

This little bookshelf has only a few books, but see how it is accessorized with a few frames an oval clock, and a few round balls on a pedestal -- it is nice to add in some round elements to such a rectangular space.

Notice the plant and the wicker basket.  It is always good to add a natural element or two.

On this shelf see how the books are arranged on the outside edges of the shelves and  decorative elements are the focal point on the middle sections.

Framed pictures and vases work well along with a few books.

If you have alot of space and alot of books, sometimes it is nice to have a decorative accessory all alone on a shelf --- as well as arranged throughout the books.

See the pieces of art and a plate propped up on the back of the shelf with a few items in front.
It really adds interest to your book shelf.

In this room they took out some of the shelves
and hung larger pieces of art on the back.

See how many different ways you can decorate a bookshelf!

Now go and give it a try at your house!

How do you make your book shelves look good?

BEFORE
It is one of those places that seems to collect all kinds of items:
books, dvds, videos, knick knacks.

AFTER
When you edit out a few things and determine what you really want to be there, if feels much better.

Take out a few of the books so that you have some negative space.

Lay some of your books on thier side, and add a few selected items:
vase, candlesticks, bookends

You can even stand up a book or two and have the cover facing out.

A few books standing up and a few laying down.

You can also add a picture frame or two, a statue and some kind of a natural element.

And tadaa!!
Your book shelf is transformed.

I am joining Susan at Between Naps on the Porch for some great before and afters.

Book shelves are for books right?
Yes ---but if you want it to look and feel "COZY"

You want to add a few other accessories.

These two photos from Better Homes and Gardens are great examples of adding that little extra:

Framed Pictures
Vases
Notice how some of the books are upright and some are
laid down flat and stacked up.
Pots
Boxes
Plates
See how they are interspersed between the books.

See a few figurines, a basket (adds great texture) and some frames.
Some books are standing open on the bottom.

Notice the different heights.

These shelves have a clock and a box with the books.

Here is a little collection of china on one shelf ---
See the different heights and the odd numbers.

This shelf highlights a couple of matching pottery pieces along with some books.

Frames
Little pot of flowers (natural element)
Wooden box

Put a few items that you LOVE along with the books and they will stand out-

You will be showcasing those few pieces ---
and it will feel good to be surrounded with items that mean something to you.

You can display hardbound books with the
dustcovers off and it gives your space a more
classic library feel.

Notice how the little pot of flowers really livens up the space!

It is also nice to add round elements to the mix --
See how good the plates work.

When you have dark shelves it is good to place a few
light colored pieces ---
They will really stand out.

So remember . . . if you want to have a "COZY" Book Shelf
Add something more than Books!

Look at your book shelves this week and see what you can do to spruce them up a bit.

Have fun!
