That is a cozy rug! Notice the pillows and the throw. The white sheer
drapes are barely noticeable but they create a softening in the room.

This after shot has curtains, pillows and a throw.
See how just adding those fabric elements create a comfortable feeling----
That is what we are going for!

Can you feel the difference ---- from this before picture and the after.
Fabric . . .
is one of the design principles that add to the atmosphere.

This before feels cold and uninviting compared to the after.
The pillows, rug, curtains and a throw really warm up the space.

This before without the pillows, the rug and the throw.

Don't you want to spend time in this room.
Fabric makes a difference!

Tables

Notice how this room has a sofa table with a lamp and accessories,
a coffee table, and a table behind the other sofa with a lamp on it.
This before shot has a couple of tables, but they are not really being used.

In the after photo see how useful they are in making a place for lighting and accessories. This helps to create that "cozy" feeling.

We have looked at this room before, but this time notice the tables.

In this before shot there are no tables. End tables, coffee tables and sofa tables, are the workhorses of the room. They give you a spot to put a book, a drink and accessories.

Adding a small table between the chairs makes it possible to put a lamp and accessories. A sofa table behind the couch does the same thing. See the difference!

Family Room Redesign

Before

After

The lamps add one piece to creating this look and feel.
Other elements that make this room so much more comfortable are:
  1. The green plants: a natural element
  2. Fabric: A throw blanket, toss pillows and a rug
  3. A touch of red: the pillows and accessories

We will be talking more about each of these areas, coming soon.

Feel the Warmth!

The lamplight in this entry, gives a welcoming feel.

See what life the lighting brings to this room.

This lamp is on a tall dresser in a bedroom.
It has a soft glow that creates an inviting feeling.

We are going to start with doing one thing that can dramatically change the feel of your room.
LIGHTING!

Step One: Lighting

Place a light in three different areas in a room, in a triangle pattern. These can be table lamps, floor lamps or candles.

Even if this is the only thing you do---your room will feel more cozy.

Now, you have to have the lights turned on! Using these instead of the ceiling fixture will create a more intimate atmosphere. A warm inviting space.

You will find that you want to spend more time in that room.

Feel the atmosphere.

I love this! Don't you just want to sit down with a good book?
See how the lamp brings that space to life.

BEFORE

AFTER

Notice the lighting, it creates a warm and inviting feeling. Now there are other specific principles that made a difference in this room. But for now we are looking at how the lamp and the candle change the whole feeling of this room.
