The fireplace is rectangular as well as the mantle and often what we put above it is also angular. Adding the round clock and the ornamental iron ball gives it a nice change.

The picture above the mantle is not quite large enough to create the right balance.
We added the larger black sign that says Family-- it has more visual weight, then grouped a couple of other framed pieces with the original one, we propped them together on the mantle.
The black pot with flowers adds weight and height to the group.
Overall we made a more balanced unit above the fireplace, and it feels right.
Now go and cozy up in front of the fire!!

The changes are subtle, and we used just
what the homeowner had already.
What made the difference?
We moved the Round Clock above the fireplace, it was larger in scale and fit the space nicely. The round element softened up all of the rectangular lines.
We created a few groupings rather than a row of frames.
Added a few books and a couple of little knick knacks,
but they are in a group and help to create a unit.
We cut some branches with leaves from the yard
and placed them in a vase.
That brought in a natural element and some height.
Notice the grouping of three and the three different heights.
It worked well for this space.
